What is sustainability?

Longwood has adopted the definition of sustainability from "Our Common Future: The Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development," commonly known as the Bruntland Report:

"Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Our Mission

The mission of the Office for Sustainability is to provide leadership and guidance in planning, developing, organizing, and implementing programs and activities that promote campus sustainability initiatives. The OFS will maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the university's sustainability efforts and provide a comprehensive, university-wide approach that encompasses the three components of sustainability: economic security, environmental protection, and social justice.
