PANEL & DISCUSSION: (RE)DESIGNING INTRO/WELCOME TO THE MAJOR COURSES
When: February 18 from 3:30-5:00 pm
308 Allen Hall
Register here: https://forms.gle/Dy7jtku4KznbhdKAA

Over a dozen Longwood academic programs require students to take a 1 credit course that orients them to the major, discipline, and career field. What do students want and need from these courses vs what does an academic program want and need?  How do we know what is working? What do we want to try next? All are welcome to this panel and discussion, to share lessons learned and ideas for the future. Thank you to panelists Jeff Halliday (COMM), Mary Lehman (BIOL/ENSC), Ronda Scarrow (THEA), and Adrienne Sudbury (BUSN) who represent courses from 1 year to 15+ years old. Sarai Blincoe (PSYC) will serve as moderator. Abundant and varied snacks sponsored by the Post-Graduate Success Initiative.

Dynamic learning dialogues (DLD)
When: February 17 to March 7
Location: Your classroom
Registration: https://forms.gle/4MPyADYp7YkLKi6e7

One of CAFE’s Signature Programs, the DLD, is an opportunity to receive rich, qualitative feedback from your students regarding how students are learning in your classroom. A member of CAFE will visit your class, talk to students, and share their anonymous feedback with you. You can use that mid-semester feedback to improve classroom interactions, and achievement of student learning outcomes, and perhaps refocus your teaching strategies for the second half of the semester. Anecdotally, faculty report that, following a DLD, they see an increase in student engagement, can make meaningful changes to their teaching approach, and ultimately receive higher student evaluation scores at the end of the semester.

For more information on the DLDs, go to http://blogs.longwood.edu/longwoodcafe/teaching-consultations/  All information, including participation, is confidential.

BECOMING A TRAUMA-INFORMED FACULTY MEMBER
When: March 25, 2025, 3:30-5:00 pm
308 Allen Hall
Register here: https://forms.gle/Hm7ifsepMJLuodW78

Trauma affects more than just the current generation of college students. Many of us have been affected by abuse, serious accidents, or witnessing a medical emergency resulting in injury or death. A trauma-informed approach is beneficial for everyone because it allows us to create an environment in which we feel safe, supported, and thrive.

To better understand the impact of trauma on students and ourselves, you are asked to attend one training session. Each presentation is about an hour and addresses topics like understanding trauma, recognizing signs and symptoms, and learning how to apply knowledge about trauma into everyday policy and practice.

  • build trust in our relationships AND set boundaries?
  • honor our own experiences AND the diverse perspectives that spark innovation?
  • shift to a both/and framework of thought?

Join CAFE’s Covey-certified facilitators as we offer the 7 Habits @ Longwood. You’ll learn to answer these questions and more using effective habits, principles, and strategies for a more effective and meaningful life. Free for all Longwood instructional faculty.
