At Soza Ballroom

Longwood’s Department of English and Modern Languages will host an on-campus reading by novelist and short story writer Patricia Engel, the 2023 John Dos Passos Prize winner, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. in Soza Ballroom in the Upchurch University Center, followed by a reception with complimentary refreshments. Engel is best-known for her collection Vida (2010), a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Fiction Award; her novel The Veins of the Ocean (2016), winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and named a New York Times Editors’ Choice; and Infinite Country (2021), a New York Times bestseller. She was chosen by the Dos Passos Prize jury from a short list of four finalists, which included Achy Obejas, Brandon Hobson and Margaret Wilkerson Sexton.

The Dos Passos Prize, first launched in 1980, is a premier literary award given annually by Longwood University to a talented American writer who experiments with form, explores a range of voices and deserves more recognition.
