Longwood University's Call Me MISTER Program Hosts 20th Annual Aspiring MISTER Summer Institute
Farmville, VA – The Call Me MISTER Program at Longwood University proudly celebrated the successful completion of its 20th Annual Aspiring MISTER Summer Institute, a transformative week-long experience designed to inspire high school students from across the Commonwealth of Virginia to explore careers in education while developing leadership, confidence, and purpose.
Throughout the week, participants engaged in interactive workshops facilitated by educators, university faculty, community leaders, and mentors who challenged students to think critically about their future and the impact they can have in their communities. The Institute provided students with opportunities to explore higher education, strengthen leadership skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the teaching profession.
One of the highlights of the week was "Rock Out with Aspiring MISTER," a literacy and community engagement initiative hosted at both the Prince Edward/Farmville Library and the Cumberland County Public Library. During these events, students shared their passion for reading and service while connecting with younger children and families through interactive literacy activities.
The Institute concluded with an inspiring alumni and educator panel featuring Lawrence Turner, Dwayne Morris, Greg Hutton, and B.J. Snead, who shared personal and professional experiences about leadership, perseverance, and the importance of investing in the next generation. Participants also had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Omega Wilson, who delivered a powerful closing keynote address that challenged students to embrace their potential, pursue their goals with determination, and become agents of positive change in their communities.

For two decades, the Aspiring MISTER Summer Institute has helped cultivate a pipeline of future educators and community leaders by exposing students to mentorship, college access opportunities, and experiences that encourage academic and personal growth. The program remains a cornerstone of Longwood University's commitment to strengthening the future educator workforce and empowering young men to lead lives of service and impact.
As the 20th Annual Institute came to a close, participants left with new friendships, renewed confidence, and a greater understanding of how their talents and voices can make a difference in schools and communities across Virginia.
