Athletes and Activism
The history of sports protests goes deep. So taking a knee during the national anthem isn't unprecedented. Athletes have often been moved to use their public platforms to advocate for social issues that often run in contrast to the opinions and beliefs of the dominant culture--from protesting conditions to demonstrating that they are citizens of conscience by speaking truth to power. There have been all sorts of protests about race, gender, money and nationality in American and Olympic sports history, but they all have this in common: the constant struggle for justice, supported by the U.S. Constitution. Join us for a panel discussion as we interrogate the long and defiant history of athletes who have protested against social injustices in American society.
