As you consider your application for PRISM, please also consider applying for mentorship in the Longwood Summer Scholars: Exploring Science program. This program provides paid apprenticeship opportunities to high school students from the local area who are historically underrepresented in STEM fields. The goal of the program is to increase access to quality STEM educational experiences for students at local high schools.
Selected students will spend eight weeks during the summer working alongside Longwood undergraduates and Longwood faculty within the PRISM program. Students will carry out college-level research with you and your PRISM student during the mornings, and in the afternoons participate in various enrichment activities. Students will learn laboratory skills in various disciplines, participate in professional development and social activities with PRISM, prepare a written manuscript of their research, and present their work at the PRISM poster session. Additionally, your PRISM student will gain valuable mentoring experience.
There is no separate application process to be a Longwood Summer Scholars mentor—your PRISM application will serve as your application for this program. Please indicate your interest when you apply for PRISM. Faculty that serve as mentors will earn an additional stipend (in addition to the PRISM stipend) at the end of the program.
