Please join us on April 24, 2018 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. for the Keynote Address during the Spring Symposium for Research and Creative Inquiry. The Keynote Address will be held in the Grand Dining Room of Dorrill Dining Hall.
This year's Keynote Address will be given by a Longwood Alumnus, Dr. Robert Northington, who is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Maine Climate Change Institute.
Dr. Northington grew up in a rural farming community in Lunenburg County, Virginia. After graduating high school in 1999, he began his undergraduate studies at Longwood to become a high school biology teacher.
During his Freshman year at Longwood, Dr. Northington became involved in a small local research project in the Appomattox River with two Longwood faculty, which inspired him to continue to explore undergraduate research opportunities beyond Farmville. At the urging of several Longwood professors, he applied for, and was accepted into, a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) researching environmental toxicology on Lake Michigan. He continued his research in freshwater ecology for the rest of his time at Longwood, ultimately leading to his acceptance into graduate school at UNC-Greensboro, where he received a Master of Science in 2005. Between his Master's and Ph.D., Dr. Northington worked for three summers on the North Slope of Alaska studying arctic lakes. Dr. Northington returned to Virginia, where he earned a Ph.D. in aquatic ecology from Virginia Tech in 2013. Currently, Dr. Northington is a Research Assistant Professor in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine, conducting research on freshwater ecosystems in both Maine and Greenland.
