The Office of Student Research is proud to feature Lucy Ellis in this week’s “Scholar Story”.

Lucy Ellis, a sophomore at Longwood University, is majoring in Environmental Science with a concentration in Life Science. Lucy also has a minor in Geographic Information Science and is a member of the Cormier Honors College for Citizen Scholars. Lucy is conducting her research as part of the Longwood Environmental Observatory (LEO) with her faculty mentor, Dr. Kenneth Fortino. Lucy’s research is focused on the environmental factors associated with primary production in a small human-constructed pond.

Lucy shared that by conducting this independent research project, she feels “more prepared for graduation; I feel like I’ll be going into the work world with a clearer vision about where I want to go.”

One of Lucy’s favorite parts of doing research has been “working with my faculty mentor, Dr. Kenneth Fortino. He always nurtures my ideas and helps carry them out.” 

Lucy recently presented her research at the Association of Southeastern Biologists annual conference in Winston-Salem, NC in March 2023. To support her research, Lucy received two Student Research and Travel grants offered by the Office of Student Research.

After graduation, Lucy plans to work in conservation.
