Amanda Chappell takes the role of “Citizen Leadership” seriously. She has shared her time and talents in numerous areas. She has been active in the community in volunteer roles including FACES, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Red Cross. Her service to Longwood University has been demonstrated in her role of a justice on the Conduct Board, a Senator with the Student Government Association, and involvement in G.R.O.W.T.H.E (Great Role-models Opening Windows to Higher Education), a Longwood University organization that has as its mission outreach of community service and support to the youth of Prince Edward County, which including tutoring and other activities.
Her service continues to be demonstrated in her academic field of Psychology. Two of Amanda’s professors shared accolades about her. When selected to be a co-author on a research project, her professor relied on Amanda’s diligence and referred to her as a “full partner in the endeavor”, and Amanda presented additional research at a psychology conference this past April. Another professor described Amanda as “an excellent student and leader who works hard, is always prepared, is self-motivated, and who is a real pleasure to have in class.” She further says that Amanda “has a positive attitude and thoughtful reflection for her peers”.
Additional words from reference letters used to describe Amanda include: perspective, serious, professional, courteous, self-aware, mature, effective, gracious, articulate, compassionate, respectful, organized and diplomatic. Her professor says that Amanda can “lead and follow according to the needs of the situation”.
Amanda has accomplished the above while taking a full academic schedule, maintaining a high GPA, and working as both a supervisor in the dining hall and serving in the role of a Resident Assistant.
Her academic honors include her induction into the honor society of Alpha Lambda Delta and recognized by Phi Kappa Phi. She represents, Alpha Sigma Pi, a national society for leadership and success, with the highest standards of integrity in all that she does. She is also a Joan of Arc Leadership participant.
The above gives reason as to why Amanda has been inducted to the Longwood University Mortar Board, a national organization that honors college seniors, that recognizes “service, scholarship and leadership”.
At a young age she faced family challenges whereby she chose to learn from adversity to embrace change for personal growth and inspiration to develop a true passion to help others. Her vow is to “make life long contributions to the global community”. No doubt she has already begun this and merits pride from her accomplishments.
A natural leader, Amanda is a living example of “The 7 Habits”. It is easy to apply each of the Habits covered in the training to what she has already achieved in life. In the training, a quote by the British author George Elliot is shared. She says “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” Amanda is a great example of this quote personified.
