The Project Management Office

The project management office provides guidance, support, and oversight for Longwood University IT projects.
We assist University Departments in exploring and deploying IT solutions to a broad spectrum of academic and administrative needs.

Projects at Longwood:  A Three-Step Process

  1. Step 1:  Initiation. Projects begin with a short interview that takes place either in person or over the telephone.   The main purpose of Step 1 is to identify what department is sponsoring the project and what business problem is being addressed or what new innovation is being sought.

  2. Step 2: Planning.  Project Specifications and Requirements.  In Step 2 we gather as many details about the project as we can.  We need to know what, if any, Longwood data is needed; who will be managing the technical aspects of implementation; funding sources/timing; contract/statements of work (SOW); vendor handouts/whitepapers/timelines/network drawings, and where the data is likely to be stored.  We also need to know who is using  the data and has access to it

  3. Step 3:  Execution, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing.  In Step 3, the project is being routed to appropriate stakeholders for operational coordination,
appropriate compliance review (PII, FERPA HIPAA, etc), and ultimately closing once the system goes into production.

Longwood Project Management uses the nationally recognized Project Management Body of Knowledge  (PMBOK) Guide and applicable Commonwealth of Virginia guides to administer its operations.
