Shayla Walker teaching a class

Are you expecting to miss one or more of your classes this semester due to a professional or personal obligation? Instead of canceling class, consider Don’t Cancel That Class Initiative! Of course, we are also happy to provide workshops with faculty members present!

This initiative provides faculty with the opportunity to bring meaningful student success workshops into the classroom while they are away. These sessions focus on critical skills that support students' academic, personal, and professional development.

How It Works:

  1. Browse Our Workshop Offerings – Select a topic from the list below.
  2. Submit a Request – Complete the Request a Workshop Form at least 3 days in advance to allow us to arrange a facilitator.
  3. Workshop Confirmation – A member of our team will reach out to confirm your request and finalize details.
  4. We Handle the Rest – A Student Success Coordinator will facilitate the session during your scheduled class time.

Available Workshops:

Faculty can choose from a range of topics designed to enhance student success, including:

  • Time Management Strategies
An essential piece of being an active learner is balancing the time between the tasks that need to get done and the things students want to do. This workshop will focus on organizing time, prioritizing tasks, and finding an overall balance in regard to time.
  • Setting Goals & Overcoming Procrastination
Many students discuss procrastination as a barrier to achieving their goals in any given class. In this workshop, we will discuss factors that make up good goals, whether they are focused on personal, academic, or involvement areas, and analyze specific strategies to curb procrastination.
  • Peer-Assisted Learning & Tutoring Overview
We offer course-based learning support for many courses in any given semester. In this workshop, we will provide an overview of the different types of learning assistance that we have available (for free!) and demonstrate how to schedule appointments.
  • Preparing for an Exam
An exam is a time for students to demonstrate their knowledge. Every reading, assignment, and class discussion are opportunities to practice and prepare for the exam. This workshop will discuss strategies and resources to help students be more effective in exam practice and time management leading up to the exam.
  • Effective Reading & Note-Taking
Whether students are taking notes on an assigned reading or in class, active reading and note-taking are foundational aspects of the learning process. The focus of this workshop will allow students to analyze their current strategies and engage with further strategies that promote active reading and note-taking.
  • APA, MLA, or Both
These workshops define the basics of either APA, MLA, or both styles of documenting research. These skills are vital throughout a student’s career at Longwood, and for many, into their future careers. Therefore knowing and practicing these basics is crucial for student success.
  • Writing Clearly and Concisely
This workshop focuses on what it means to write in a clear and concise manner. Students are given tips for how to recognize this in their own writing, and then practice ways of cleaning up a piece of text to make it more concise and therefore clearer to the audience.
  • Writing Strategies and Tips
Writing is hard. Sometimes just understanding your own writing process can help free you from thinking you are doing it all wrong. This is why we developed a workshop that focuses on things like “the writing process,” “mapping your own process,” a brief “writing concisely” section, and finally “plagiarism and copyright.” With these tools, students have a greater chance at success.
  • Customize a Writing Workshop
It’s impossible to know exactly what every instructor needs when it comes to writing. Maybe you need a workshop that covers both APA and Chicago, or all of the big three. Or perhaps you want your students to understand that everyone has a writing process and that no two are the same. This is where requesting a customized workshop can come help out. Let us know what you need, and we’ll customize a workshop to meet those specific needs.

Why Participate?

  • Keeps students engaged in productive learning rather than missing class.
