The DEC is happy to provide training to individual faculty members and/or entire departments on all of Canvas' many parts. From course design to function how-to's, the DEC is prepared for in-person training in our learning spaces in Allen Hall, Zoom meetings, and other locations/methods of your choice. Along with the Canvas Guides, we have crafted many resources that you may find helpful.
Canvas Catalog
Longwood College of Graduate & Professional Studies offers a variety of endorsements and teacher licensure courses, as well as non-credit classes and workshops for CEU’s, educational recertification points, and other professional development. Longwood’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies also hosts a variety of one-day, two-day or week-long events and workshops to inspire and inform Virginia’s educators.
Canvas Catalog is a portal that integrates directly with Canvas and allows Longwood University CGPS to offer learning opportunities to students within or outside of the Longwood community.
Namecoach
Namecoach is an LTI integrated into Canvas that allows users to record their name in the manner they would prefer it pronounced and select their pronouns. Faculty and students then have the ability to listen to those recordings to better understand pronunciation and provide a more inclusive environment. NameCoach is enabled in all Canvas courses by default; however, instructors may choose to disable it.

Panopto
Panopto is a tool integrated into Canvas that makes working with video easy, and it can be used for recording lectures or presentations, uploading existing video, or embedding videos with content in other parts of the Canvas site. Panopto can assist faculty in making a classroom virtual, flipping a classroom, capturing lectures and more. You can also embed quizzes into Panopto videos to ensure student participation and view video analytics. Panopto is also available to students to record, manipulate and submit videos as assignments and projects for any course.
Faculty and staff can download Panopto with the assistance of the Help Desk onto Longwood University owned machines. If you have administrative credentials, you may download the application without Help Desk assistance.

Poll Everywhere
Poll Everywhere is the perfect complement to instruction, with flexible, real-time polls, quizzes, and surveys. Present activities from the web or in slideware, and send the results to Canvas. You can also export a Gradebook report from Poll Everywhere to Canvas. Poll Everywhere can be used in online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes. Faculty interested in using the University Poll Everywhere account should contact the DEC and request access. The University account gives faculty the ability to connect Poll Everywhere responses with Canvas Grades, larger response seats, and access to various response reports. Students must use a computer or personal cell-phone to respond to Poll Everywhere questions within a course setting. The student is responsible for any text-messaging rates or charges that may apply to their mobile-phone account. The DEC recommends faculty and/or departments request and complete Poll Everywhere training prior to using it with students.

Students:
The username and password for Poll Everywhere are NOT the same as your LancerNet credentials. You will need to use your @live.longwood.edu account as your username and the password you set with the system. Your first time logging in to Poll Everywhere, you will need to use the “Forgot Password” option to set your account password. If you plan to use your phone to respond to poll questions, you will need to download the free Poll Everywhere app on your phone. With the app, you can more quickly access polls and see your history of responses.
Respondus 4.0
Respondus 4.0 is a tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Canvas. Exams can be created offline using a familiar Windows environment (not Apple compatible) and imported into Canvas with ease. Both the DEC and the Help Desk can assist you in downloading the Respondus 4.0 software onto your machine.
*Note that Respondus 4.0 will not work on a Mac machine. The DEC can make the conversion for you if you have a MAC, we must receive the correctly formatted Word or Excel documents to be able to complete the conversion. Please allow 2-3 business days for the conversion of quizzes and exams.

Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor
Respondus Lockdown Browser is an internet browser downloaded and installed by students, which locks down the computer on which they are taking the test so that students cannot open other applications or web pages. Lockdown Browser does not monitor or record student activity.
Respondus Monitor is an instructor-enabled feature of Respondus Lockdown Browser, which uses the students’ webcams to record video and audio of the exam environment. It also records the students’ computer screens. Instructors can view these recordings after the exam session is over.
Respondus Lockdown Browser is installed in all of the academic labs across Campus as well as the commons in the Greenwood Library. Instructors who would like it installed in specific classrooms on campus, as well as on their University-owned machines, should contact the Help Desk for installation.

You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, nonproctored exam. (The webcam feature is sometimes referred to as “Respondus Monitor.”) Your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone. A broadband connection is also required.

TurnItIn
TurnItIn is an online plagiarism detection software that works to promote the academic integrity of Canvas Assignments offered by Longwood University. Assignments requiring TurnItIn should be enabled by the faculty member in advance of the assignment being opened to students to ensure the highest level of assignment integrity. Faculty are responsible for enabling TurnItIn and selecting the settings which they wish to utilize with the software.
Faculty may request TurnItIn training prior to enabling the software in a Canvas course at any time from the DEC. Upon request, the DEC can provide faculty with pre-written guides and informational resources to support course integration. All TurnItIn reports and feedback will be reported from TurnItIn directly to the instructor of the Canvas course.

VEO
VEO, or “Video Enhanced Observation”, is a specialized video-capture solution primarily used by the College of Education, Health, and Human Services for teaching and client observations. VEO is available at cost and only to those determined by the DEC as having a pedagogical need for a skills-based observation and evaluation solution. WordPress
WordPress is an online platform for creating blogs and personal websites. Users can add video, images, and text content. There are many customizable options for the content layout. Content is housed on the WordPress platform and can be shared through links to the content. Faculty generally use WordPress as a means for students to collect and deliver online portfolios. Some faculty use WordPress for personal websites where they share personal updates. Students generally use WordPress because of a classroom assignment but are not limited to this use.
Students can create personal websites and manage and maintain them on their own. Once content is created, it is the student’s responsibility to keep track of the changes and material located on the site. Once the student leaves Longwood University, the content will be available to copy to a personal WordPress site for 1 year after the student leaves the university.
Each WordPress site has 25mb of space but this site limitation can be increased on a case-by-case need. Users can find and create their own personal sites through blogs.longwood.edu and will use their Longwood University credentials to sign in and manage the content.
The DEC will provide assistance for in-class or personal training and best practices for the WordPress sites. The DEC also provides administration for WordPress as a whole and can make changes to sites based on emergency cases. For assistance, contact dec@longwood.edu.
Zoom
The DEC is responsible for the administration of the University’s Zoom license. Longwood users should visit https://longwood-edu.zoom.us/ and sign in with Lancernet ID and password to access their Longwood Zoom account.
While all Faculty, Staff, and students all have access to fully licensed accounts with no time limits, Cloud Recording is not available for students. Local recording is available to all users.
Users are encouraged to reach out to the DEC with any questions they may have regarding the use of Zoom in the teaching and learning process.
