In collaboration with the SEED Innovation Hub and the Digital Education Collaborative, CAFE’s January Pre-Semester Pedagogy Series offers faculty a chance to explore teaching, learning, and emerging technologies. Acknowledging the complex concerns, intellectual challenges, and opportunities these tools bring, participants will explore the intersection of these technologies with key pedagogical questions such as:

  • How can we design learning experiences that promote the development of foundational skills, like critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration?
  • How can we encourage students to engage deeply with complex ideas, explore multiple perspectives, and develop nuanced thinking skills?
  • What instructional strategies support learners in making mistakes, struggling with difficult concepts, and achieving a deep understanding of the material?
  • What role do emerging technologies play in all of this?

Through hands-on workshops and discussions, participants will build AI literacy, explore strategies to design a course that balances responsible AI use with thoughtful decisions about when and how students should engage with these technologies, create AI-integrated assignments that promote creativity and critical thinking, and integrate technologies to create immersive educational experiences.  The series concludes on January 8 at the SEED Hub with interactive sessions where faculty can "play" with these tools and design practical course applications. Faculty are encouraged to focus on one course and tailor their participation to align with their or their program’s interests and teaching goals.

PLAN A PRODUCTIVE SEMESTER
Join CAFE to plan your semester. We’ll follow Kerry Anne Rockquemore’s process for crafting a schedule to meet our needs, both for work and home. You’ll have time to reflect on the past semester, brainstorm a list of projects, and then to schedule your work and your relaxation. The event is hosted both online and in person. All faculty and staff are welcome. Please RSVP with the link below.

Interested in creating a faculty-led study abroad program? This two-part workshop series aims to inspire faculty to submit proposals and help them understand the process from proposal to post-course reflection.  Join us for an interactive two-part workshop designed to guide you through developing an international course experience.

Workshop 1: Exploring Study Abroad Opportunities We will explore the significance of study abroad programs, examining different models and resources available to faculty. We'll discuss the expectations for both faculty and students, providing an overview of international academic experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm potential program concepts and learn about navigating the initial proposal process.

Workshop 2: Proposal Development We will introduce faculty to the study abroad portal, working directly with campus experts to help you develop a robust proposal. You'll receive guidance on addressing key components such as budget planning, course design, and travel logistics. Our goal is to support you in drafting a submission-ready proposal that captures the essence of your proposed international academic experience.

7 HABITS @ LONGWOOD FOR INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY
Faculty lives are filled with what seem to be competing needs. How can we

  • shift our thinking to a both/and framework?
  • navigate the many tugs on our time and energy AND prioritize our well-being?
  • build trust in our relationships AND set boundaries?
  • honor our own experiences AND the diverse perspectives that spark innovation?

All instructional faculty are invited to participate in Franklin Covey's 7 Habits @ Longwood for Faculty--the complete Signature Program led by CAFE’s Covey-certified facilitators. You’ll learn to answer these questions and more using effective habits, principles, and strategies for a more effective and meaningful life.

We have heard from many faculty that the traditional two-day program doesn’t work with teaching schedules.  We created an option that we hope will provide an opportunity for faculty to participate. The program is offered in-person on the following dates:

  • Kick Off: Saturday, February 8th, 2025 from 9:00a-5:00p
  • Four 90-minute sessions: Friday, February 21 and 28th; March 7th and 21st, from 1:00-3:00

Participants will need to attend all of the sessions to earn the Signature certificate.

Free for all Longwood faculty, you can see more information and register @ https://forms.gle/dSbFLxgmDQdzXVTT7  to reserve a seat.  If you are interested in 7 Habits but are unable to participate in this program, send an email to gutierrezar@longwood.edu.  If we have enough interest, we can explore other options.
