THIS WEEK’S PICK ME UP
END OF THE SEMESTER: WALKING for WELLBEING (for faculty and staff)
Date: STARTING APRIL 6; Wednesdays, 3:45-4:45pm
Location: Health and Fitness Center Lobby
Facilitator: Adam Franssen
The psychological benefits of exercise, including coping with stress, are well documented and some researchers include physical activity as one of the “Five Ways to Wellbeing.” To support your overall well-being approach, CAFE is teaming up with the Health and Fitness Center to offer a weekly Walking for Wellbeing session to help faculty cope with end-of-semester stress. Every Wednesday from April 6th to May 11th, please join us in the lobby of the Fitness Center to go on a ~30 minute, 2-mile walk link expired. If you’d like to walk farther or cut the trip short, feel free to do so! If you feel like talking about your classes as we go, we can do that, but it isn’t a requirement.
WEEK OF APRIL 4
PALS (PEDAGOGY AND LUNCH)
Facilitator: Dr. Chris Kukk
Date: April 8th from 12-1 pm
Location: Stevens 107 (the Honors Students Lounge)
Please feel free to bring lunch (we have a kitchenette with a microwave, kettle, refrig, etc…). Last month’s PALs attendees determined that they wanted an “encore” discussion of trigger warnings. We will keep the same reading as last month, which is The Association for Psychological Science's article "The Following News Release Contains Potentially Disturbing Content: Trigger Warnings Fail to Help and May Even Harm" (607 words). The link is: https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/releases/trigger-warnings-fail-to-help.html
Some questions and ideas to consider:
(1) Should trigger warnings be used in academic settings?
If no, why and what do you do instead?
If yes, why and how would you address the trigger warning problems outlined in the article?
(2) When you notice a student visibly upset about something in class, how do you handle it?
(3) How do you manage difficult issues, topics and/or material in class?
