The Center for Faculty Enrichment (CAFE), in collaboration with the Digital Education Collaborative and Greenwood Library, will host Longwood University’s 13th annual Teaching and Learning Institute on May 12, 2026 in Blackwell Hall. Through keynote, discussions, and interactive sessions, participants will explore AI literacy, assignment and course design, writing pedagogy, academic integrity, and human-centered approaches to integrating GenAI into our courses. Sessions will focus on aligning GenAI use with learning outcomes, designing transparent assignments, and addressing questions of ethics, access, and equity. Participants will also consider when intentional AI use supports learning and when non-use may be more appropriate, while the Institute foregrounds what remains uniquely human in our work: disciplinary expertise, relational pedagogy, creativity, care, and ethical responsibility.

The Institute is free for all Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College, and Southside Virginia Community College faculty and staff.

The first 25 participants to register will receive a copy of Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning (2nd ed.) by José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson.

Keynote Address: Teaching and Learning in the Age of Generative AI: A Human-Guided Approach

The rapid rise of generative AI has generated both enthusiasm and concern across higher education. This keynote situates generative AI within the broader academic landscape, drawing on current research to outline the present state of the field. It considers documented limitations, ethical risks, and instances of misuse, while underscoring the importance of human judgment and human-in-the-loop approaches. The session concludes with research-informed examples of how generative AI can be integrated to support teaching and learning in higher education.
