Farmville experiences deep freeze events every couple of years and averages major two snow events each winter.

The University does close for adverse weather events. The University rarely closes on a weather prediction, instead the decision to close is usually made early in the morning. The typical triggers for closing are when the Farmville Area Bus shuts down or when the Landscape and Grounds crew is unable to clear parking lots and sidewalks.

When we experience a winter weather event, moving around campus may be randomly hazardous, especially if the freeze-thaw cycle has created black ice on walkways. The section of Brock Commons between Willett and the Dining Hall freezes first because it is over the parking garage.

The environmental factors of temperature and wind create a perceived temperature that may be well below the measured temperature. For example:

· A 10mph breeze at 10 oF feels like -9 oF

The following Wind Chill chart further demonstrates the synergistic hazard of cold and wind.
