Environmental Compliance
EH&S serves as Longwood University's coordinator for compliance with the following laws and associated EPA regulations
AIR:
- Clean Air Act - Title V- The heating plant is the only major source on campus and the permitting and recordkeeping is handled by Facilities Management
- Refrigerants - Leak detection systems are maintained by Facilities Management
WATER:
- Safe Drinking Water - EH&S facilitates water testing as needed. Most University facilities are on a municipal water system.
- Storm Water Runoff - Captial Design and Construction manages this because Longwood's major risk occurs in construction projects.
- Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures - EH&S maintains the SPCC plan.
GROUND
- Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA)
- Solid waste disposal is managed by Facilities Management
- Hazardous waste disposal is managed by EH&S
- Universal waste recycling is jointly managed by EH&S and Landscaping and Grounds
- Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) - Capital Design and Construction manages Asbestos abatement and disposal as part of renovation projects. All known Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been disposed of. The University, to date, hasn't triggered the other provisions of the TSCA regulation.
- Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) - EH&S compiles the annual SARA Title 3 Tier ii report and submits it to the state and Prince Edward County Emergency Management.
- Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) - Landscape and Grounds staff maintain compliance with this regulation. The University uses contracted pest management services for building interiors.
- Superfund - If the University were to be identified as a Potentially Responsible Party (PRP) EH&S would take the lead on determining if waste was sent to the site.
