Above ground storage tanks are large containers of liquid or gaseous substances. Depending on the material contained, the storage tank may fall under multiple regulations. All tanks of hazardous materials must be labeled for hazard communication and emergency response purposes.

Common above ground storage tanks on campus include:

· Emergency Generator fuel tanks – These are double walled tanks underneath the emergency generator. These tanks are regulated under the Spill Prevention, Control, & Countermeasure Plan.

· Propane tanks – Typically 250 gallon tanks that provide fuel for cooking or heating.

· Diesel and Gasoline fuel storage tanks and waste grease collection tanks – These tanks are regulated under the Spill Prevention, Control, & Countermeasure Plan. Additionally, these tanks are regulated by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) under 9VAC2591-10. The thresholds for regulation are either a single container volume of 660+ gallons, or a total aggregate capacity greater than 1,320 gallons at the facility. Because our aggregate capacity is above 1,320 gallons but below 25,000 gallons, Longwood University above ground fuel tanks have registration, notification, and closure requirements under this regulation.

· Water tanks for irrigation of plants or pressure washing building exteriors

· Brine tanks for winter sidewalk management

Longwood University conducts monthly and annual inspections on each regulated tank. The inspection requirements generally exceed the requirements of the Spill Prevention Controls and Countermeasures Plan (SPCC). Longwood University does include regulated and unregulated ASTs in the SPCC Plan.
