Longwood University’s Hazardous Waste Management Program is designed to ensure that all hazardous waste is handled in a manner consistent with Federal and State regulations; that the stored accumulation of hazardous waste is monitored effectively, waste is disposed of properly, any potential waste reduction or less hazardous chemical usage alternatives are evaluated, and responses to any hazardous waste incidents related to Longwood University are coordinated and mitigated with and by the proper authorities.  The program’s prescribed oversight and control of hazardous waste are based on regulatory requirements and are designed to assure compliance with Federal and State regulations.

This program applies to Longwood University faculty, staff, and students.

The Hazardous Waste Management Program covers the following chemical waste categories:

  • Ignitable Wastes:  flammable and combustible materials that are liquid, solid or gaseous
  • Corrosive Wastes:   strong acids or bases
  • Reactive Wastes:  explosive or unstable materials
  • TCLP Wastes:  subject to testing using the EPA's leaching procedure
  • Toxic Wastes:  materials that may contain heavy metals and other organic constituents
  • Acute Hazardous Wastes:  one of 500 chemicals listed by the Environmental Protection Agency
  • Universal Waste:  batteries, Pesticides, Mercury containing equipment, and fluorescent lamp tubes
