Dear Longwood Community,

In this second week of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we will focus on how your students or kids (or maybe even you!) can get started in a career in the extremely exciting field of cyber security. A successful career in cyber security isn’t just about technical skills. There are actually a growing number of opportunities for people with strong soft skills. Getting started in cyber security is easier than you might think. Here are some exciting new ways you can get started:

  • Longwood’s Center for Cyber Security: A national center for digital forensics that supports degrees in Information Systems and Cyber Security, Cyber Security, Forensics and Policy, and Homeland Security.
  • Longwood’s Cyber Security Club: The club’s mission is to promote the understanding of computer and network security threats, to engage in intercollegiate cyber security competitions, and to serve as a supplement to help prepare students for careers in cyber security.
  • Cyber Fasttrack: A fantastic website dedicated to getting college students started in cyber security.
  • Cyber Start Go: A website developed for junior high and high school students featuring cyber-security-related online puzzles and challenges.
  • Girls Go Cyber Start: A program that empowers girls to become the next cyber security leaders.
  • SANS Cyber Security Academies: A series of scholarship-based immersion academies that are free for participants. The categories for the academies are:  Veteran, Diversity, Women, and Sponsor-Based.

If you have any questions about our activities in October or suggestions about how to improve our cyber security efforts, please contact Information Security. They are responsible for our overall security awareness program and will be happy to hear from you.

Best,

The Information Security Team
