Once again graduation week finds Longwood basking in the glow of yet another Big South softball title triumph under Coach Kathy Riley, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament later this week. And today, there is other happy news to share for our athletics program and the University.

With the departure of Troy Austin for Duke last fall, I asked Michelle Meadows to serve as Interim Athletics Director — handing the reins of our program to a leader of great character who is deeply respected across Longwood and higher education.

And this year has now arguably been the best ever for Longwood athletics, both in competition and in the classroom. Michelle’s work heading the department has been extraordinary — as has her devotion to our student athletes and their development as people throughout her career.

As the Board and I reflected on the future, it became abundantly clear that Michelle’s vision, expertise and deep integrity make her the perfect choice to lead us going forward. Today I’m delighted to name her our Athletics Director, and just had the delight of announcing this news to the Athletics Department in person.

The release, which provides more detail on Michelle’s remarkable resume and accomplishments, will be shared publicly later this morning.  Please join me in congratulating an extraordinary Lancer and wonderful colleague!

Many thanks,
