Fire Protection Systems - Longwood University is dedicated to the safety of every individual that works, resides and visits our campus. When we design new structures, fire protection systems are integrated into every one of them. These systems include fire/smoke detection, fire sprinkler suppression and others. We are constantly striving to upgrade our systems as they become dated and replace them with new technology.
Fire Alarms and Drills - Fire drills are conducted routinely and at various times of day as mandated by the Virginia State Fire Marshalls Office. When a fire alarm is activated, everyone must immediately exit the structure and proceed to their designated “Assembly Area” or “Area of Rescue” as identified on the “Evacuation Map” located at every exit and residential room exit door.
Fires On Campus - All open fires on campus must be permitted, some require permitting by the State Fire Marshall's Office, but most can be permitted by EH&S. Fire and Fireworks
Certain Dining Services activities are exempted. These include cooking on propane fired grills and use of portable food warming fuels (gelled ethanol).
Please note that there is a state wide Spring Burn Prohibition for outside fires before 4PM from February 15-April 30.
Fire Watch - A Fire Watch is often required when the fire protection systems in a building are disabled for an extended period of time.
Most of our buildings have both fire detection and fire suppression systems where both systems would need to be down for a full roving fire watch to be required. We typically implement a modified fire watch to address partial impairments of building fire protection systems.
However, if a partial impairment occurs in a residence hall during normal sleeping hours, a roaming fire watch will be activated.
A Roaming Fire Watch involves one or more persons who walk the property every 15 minutes watching for signs of fire. If fire extinguishers aren’t readily available throughout the property, that person will carry a portable fire extinguisher.
Hot Work Permits - All hot work (welding, brazing, soldering...) outside of an established construction project fence must be permitted by EH&S. Hot Works
Electric Heaters & Blankets - by University Policy 5603, all electric space heaters must be approved for use by EH&S. Electric Heater Clearance Form
Fire Safety In Residence Halls - Certain prohibitions apply to residential student rooms.
Area of Rescue - As part of the emergency egress plan for each building, Areas of Rescue are created on floors that do not have direct ground level exits. An Area of Rescue is typically in the stairwell where a blue emergency phone is mounted. It is intended for use during a fire alarm (drill or actual emergency) by person who are unable to descend the emergency stairwell. When the alarm sounds, the person moves to the Area of Rescue and uses the emergency phone to let the Farmville Dispatch Center know they are in that location and need rescue.
