• Any Longwood University sponsored event that included planned involvement of animals requires that the event sponsor collect proof of vaccination and an owner’s responsibility certification for each animal that participates in the event.

Any Longwood University sponsored event that included planned involvement of animals requires that the event sponsor collect proof of vaccination and an owner’s responsibility certification for each animal that participates in the event.

This applies to dog walks, petting zoos, study paws, but does not apply to an owner who brings their dog on campus to attend a concert, picnic, or other event that lacks planned animal participation. In other words, if you are inviting people to bring their pets, this requirement applies.

It is recommended that a handwashing station is located in the vicinity of where the animals will be.

Procedure Instructions

  • Before the Event:
    • As part of the event announcement, encourage attendees bringing animals to send proof of vaccination directly to Environmental Health & Safety (Safety@longwood.edu or Fax: 434-395-2647) EH&S maintains a list of animals that have current proof of vaccination that you may use for your event. (see: What’s Required for Each Type of Animal)
    • EH&S maintains a spreadsheet of immunization records for animals from previous events and will send you an updated copy before the event.
  • On the Day of the Event:
    • For any animals that are not on EH&S’s list, collect proof of vaccination at the event for submittal to EH&S.
      • Electronic copies are preferred, so take a picture or scan it.
  • After the Event
    • Send a copy of the owner’s certification form and all immunization records to Safety@longwood.edu.

  • Failure to follow these procedures jeopardizes approval for future events by your organization.

Use the Owner Responsibility Certification for Longwood Sponsored Animal Events form for all participating animals and submit the completed form to EH&S.
