Fires and Fireworks:

Some examples of fire permitting are listed below:
- Small fires in enclosures require an EH&S permit
- (submit application no less than 2 business days prior to event).
- Propane fired fireplace fires require an EH&S permit
- Candles used in a ceremony require an EH&S permit
- Fires during the annual Spring Burn Prohibition require a State (SFMO) permit.
- Bonfires (greater than 3 feet across) require both an EH&S permit and a State (SFMO) permit
- Pyrotechnics require a State (SFMO) permit
- Fireworks require a State (SFMO) permit
- All open fires (including candles) on campus require a Fire Request Application or Hot Work Permit.
- Propane cooking fires are exempted provided they are at least 20 feet away from any structures
Note: the Virginia Department of Forestry prohibits fires before 4PM between the date of February 15 and April 30 every year. (State Law §10.1-1142)
Certain types of fire activities on state property require a State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) permit.
Procedure Instructions
- At least 30 days* before your fire:
- Review the permit requirements listed below.
- Submit a fire request application to EH&S or contact EH&S if you think you need an SFMO's permit.
- For SFMO permit applications, print a copy of the applicable permit form (linked below) and fill out everything you can before bringing it to EH&S for assistance.
Permit Requirements
- The Longwood Fire Permit is for cooking and recreational fires on campus
- The Longwood Hot Work Permit is for brazing, welding, grinding, cutting or other work that could start a fire.
- Contact EH&S two work days before your work if you need a Hot Work Permit.
- Emergency work will be permitted as soon as possible
