Internships & Work Based Experiences

The Center for Career Success, through the Career Experience Hub, provides a nexus of support for work-based experiences across campus.

What we offer faculty and staff:

• Internship Workshops — offered in-class or at Maugans G05. Complete this form to request a workshop.
• Student Referrals — refer a student for internship search support. See Refer a Student.
• Internship Search and Professional Document Appointments — Faculty and staff can encourage students to meet with a Career Coach through Handshake for support with their internship search and professional documents. Students can view appointment types and schedule through Handshake at longwood.joinhandshake.com. Appointment types include:
  • Internship Search,
  • Internship Resume Review,
  • Internship Cover Letter Review, and
  • Internship Interview Preparation.
• Employer Outreach Request Form — a centralized submission pathway for faculty, departments and staff to request employer connections. Complete this form to get started.
• List of Internships by Major (Forthcoming) — A collection of Handshake internship listings that will be published on Longwood's website.

The Career Experience Hub organizes student opportunities around four stages of work-based learning — Career Awareness, Exploration, Preparation, and Experience based on the Jobs for the Future Work Based Learning Framework. The following opportunities are currently offered through Longwood's Center for Career Success:

Career Exploration — Testing the Waters: 

• Work Shadows — students can get a firsthand look at a career field by spending time with a professional in the workplace. These opportunities occur during spring break, with applications opening each fall. Refer students here for more information.
• Career Treks — faculty-initiated employer site visits. Contact us at career@longwood.edu to request more information. 
• Micro-internships — short-term, 20-hour, project-based work with an employer offered each Summer I semester. Designed for Exploratory, BOND, and first-year students, though all students are welcome to apply. Applications open each fall. Refer students here for more information.
• Teamship — structured, employer group projects. Fall 2026 pilot program; students of all majors and class years are welcome to apply. Contact us at bellamysankard@longwood.edu to request more information. 

Career Preparation — Building Experience

• Virtual Internships — facilitated remote internship placements, limited availability (summer 2027 pilot). Contact us at bellamysankard@longwood.edu to request more information. 
• Internships (Partnerships) — Have a student interested in a criminal justice or legal internship in the local area? Longwood’s Center for Career Success partners with the Heart of Virginia Access to Justice Network to connect students with local internship opportunities. Refer students to book an internship search appointment through Handshake to learn more, or contact bellamysankard@longwood.edu.
