Role of FAR

While the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) role is required for every NCAA institution, the duties of the FAR can look substantially different from institution to institution. The most recent NCAA constitution (2021) added a statement about the role of the FAR and states that the FAR is “the principal point of contact to whom student-athletes can report any action, activity or behavior by anyone associated with athletics programs inconsistent with this Constitution’s principle of student-athlete health and well-being.” This addition emphasizes that the FAR is a resource and connection point for student-athletes, independent of the athletics department.

The three primary duties of the FAR position:

• Monitor the academic integrity of the athletics program
• Ensure a positive student-athlete experience in and out of the classroom
• Provide oversight and institutional control of the athletics program
