IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) provides data and statistical analysis, file management capabilities, graphics and reporting features.

Longwood faculty and registered students (by request of faculty) can now download SPSS “Standard Campus Edition” on their personally-owned computer.   

Important: Please note that this software is for academic use only. Academic use is defined by IBM as teaching and learning and non-commercial research that does not result in direct or indirect monetary gain for the University. Administrative use licenses must be obtained separately. There is a limit of one license per user per year. The current license is valid until 02/29/2024. You will need to re-authorize your license at that time. We will be in touch with instructions prior to expiration. 

Accessing the Download and Installing SPSS
To access the download, you will need an authorization code. You can request that code from the Help Desk by emailing  helpdesk@longwood.edu.  The Help Desk will reply with your code. You will receive a separate email informing you that you that you have been invited to work in the “SPSS” folder in Box. That email will include a link to access the download in Box.

Once you receive your access code and the link, you will follow the instructions below to download and install SPSS.

Note: In order to install and license the campus version of SPSS, all other versions and/or trials of SPSS must be uninstalled from your computer. For further directions please see IBM’s articles on How to Uninstall SPSS from a Mac or How to Uninstall SPSS from Windows. Once any other versions of SPSS have been uninstalled, please follow the steps below.

  1. Click on the link to the download in Box.
     
  2. Choose the appropriate installer (Windows or Mac), hover your mouse over the file name, click on More Options (...), and select Download. Once the download completes, click on the file to open it.

  3.  Follow the steps in the install wizard.

  4.  On the final step, in Windows the Start IBM SPSS Statistics now checkbox will be checked. Select Finish. On MacOS, select Close then launch the SPSS Statistics application

  5.  A dialogue box will appear prompting you to activate the software. Select Launch License Wizard and then Authorized user  license. You will be prompted to enter an authorization code. Enter the code provided to you by the Help Desk.

  6.  Click the Add button, Next and Finish.

  7.  Your licensed copy of SPSS will open. 

Requesting Student Access
If you have students who you would like to have access to SPSS on their personally owned machines, please send a request to include the course and a list of student names to helpdesk@longwood.edu. We will reach out via Live Mail directly to the students with instructions and access codes. Student access is valid for one semester only. If continued access is needed, a new request will need to be submitted. 

**Note: SPSS will not run on Chromebooks
