What is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)?

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) measures the extent to which first-year and senior students engage in effective educational practices that are empirically linked with learning, personal development, and other desired outcomes such as persistence, satisfaction, and graduation. Representing multiple dimensions of student engagement, the NSSE includes 47 items that comprise ten Engagement Indicators (EI) in addition to six areas of High-Impact Practice (HIP) across which national benchmark comparisons are available. https://nsse.indiana.edu/nsse/survey-instruments/topical-modules/index.html

2023 NSSE Survey at Longwood University: March 1 – 31, 2023

At Longwood University we want our students to have a strong educational experience. The NSSE Survey helps us to collect vital information about experiences inside and outside of the classroom. This information helps us to make important improvements.

The 2023 NSSE Survey will be shared with our first-year and senior students beginning March 1st, 2023. A personalized link will come via email from President Reveley. Additional reminders will come from Cameron Patterson, Vice President for Student Affairs.

Incentive Prizes for Completion

Three drawings for incentive awards for $75 Lancer Cash and three drawings for incentive awards for $100 Amazon Gift Cards will be made between March 13 and March 27.

A final drawing will be made on April 3, 2023 for $200 Lancer Cash. Lancer Cash will be deposited into your student account and can be spent at any of the campus locations and community establishments that accept Lancer Cash.

As additional drawings, one first-year student will receive a parking pass for the 2023-2024 school year with a designated park spot on campus in the commuter lot of the students choosing and one senior will receive a Barnes & Noble graduation diploma frame. Your chances of winning depend on how many complete the survey; the last time we administered this survey about 630 students responded.

What are the benefits to Longwood?

Primarily the NSSE results are used to inform educational improvements and enhance student success and retention; specific measures are used for assessment and accreditation purposes (e.g., the Civitae Core, SCHEV competencies, and SACS-COC expectations). Campus Departments such as our Upchurch University Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of the Dean of Students, and Residential & Commuter Life also use the feedback to evaluate programs and make important feedback that helps to improve the student experience.

What kind of information is available?

Results from the NSSE items are displayed alongside three comparison groups including all US institutional participants within that year, a group of institutions who share the same basic Carnegie Classification, and a final group of institutions who are of the same geographic region and public/private sector.

All Longwood-generated NSSE Reports feature multi-year (2020, 2017, & 2014) comparisons to the Southeast Public Group on the following:  ten Engagement Indicators (EIs), six High-Impact Practices (HIPs), ten self-reported Estimates of Gain, in addition to Perceptions of Institutional Emphases, Quality Relationships, and Overall Satisfaction.  Furthermore, handouts that include multi-year individual item response frequencies and statistical comparisons are also provided.
